Windmill Craft: How Heat Rises

Equipment needed:
  • Construction paper
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Lamp (heat source)
  • Modeling clay
  • Wooden skewer

Step one: Make cone
Form a piece of paper into a cone. Cut slits in the base for air to get through.

Step two: Cut windmill blades
Use this template to cut out windmill blades. Cut so only the grey area is left. Fold on the dotted lines.

Step three: Assemble
Make a ball of clay, and put the skewer in it. Set the cone over the skewer, and add the windmill blades on top.

Step four: Add heat
Use a lamp to heat the air inside the cone. The hot air will rise and make the windmill spin.
Parker Straight, an intern at Fagan, demonstrates how heat rises with a windmill activity. The lamp heats the air in the cone which rises through the small opening at the top and spins the windmill.
